Hi everyone,
my neighbor told me that Flora Singer was having registration for kindergarten orientation, so I called this morning and got the scoop. There are 2 parent information sessions -- one on April 5 and one on another day that I admit to forgetting -- I signed up for the 5th. Both days are at 9am.
The parent/child orientation sessions are on May 2 and May 3. The afternoon slots for the 3rd were already filled up, so I signed up for 2:15 on the 2nd. They have morning slots available both days (or at least they did when I called a little while ago).

I should have emailed you all (and the neighborhood listserve, frankly) since I had this information. The other parent orientation date is April 9th. Sollo is going in for his kid orientation at 9:30 on May 3rd.

Can we register for the school year during the parent/child orientation or do we have to attend both sessions?

I believe you are supposed to register during the child orientation. You are supposed to attend both - they are different. My impression is that the parent orientation is about 2 hrs long, similar to the informal tour/info session that Becky, Cristina and I got when we went a couple of weeks ago. The child orientation is just a 1/2 hr long thing where the kids go off in a small group with a teacher and the parents make sure they have all their paperwork taken care of.
ReplyDeleteI actually emailed the principal about putting this info on their website, couched in terms of apologizing for wasting his time with our private tour, since it sounds like it will be replicated at the orientation in April, which is before the immersion lottery applications are even due!
Thanks Joanna, I just got off the phone with the school. Yes, you have to attend both and you have to call to sign up 301-649-8000.
ReplyDeleteThe first in April is to pick up all the required forms, questions/answers, and get a tour. Note that no children are allowed on this visit. The second in May is the child orientation, where you return the documents, the kids get their tour, do an activity and meet the before/after people, Kids After Hours.
I registered for Friday April 5th (9am) for the parent sesson and Friday, May 3rd at 9:55am for the kids orientation.

The woman I spoke with said the parent info session in April is where they'll pass out the registration paperwork, explain how everything works, what kindergarten is like, etc and give a tour of the school. Like Joanna said, the May session is for kids too, and you can turn in your paperwork then. Of course, you don't really have to do either session -- you can get the paperwork from the Montgomery County school system website and turn it in whenever. And there will be an open house-type thing the Friday before school starts in August, which I learned about when I was planning our summer vacation.

Ok, so i am in on this action too. orienting w/o the kiddo on 4/12 @ 9 a.m, and with kiddo on 5/3 @ 10:20. thanks to the organized people who prodded me along on this. i can't believe we have kindergarteners already!
