napping question

I'm wondering if any of you with kids who are starting to nap less have tried shortening the nighttime sleep in response. I know the tendency is to make them go to bed earlier to compensate for the lost sleep, and I know that the kids are eventually supposed to sleep longer every night once they stop napping, but what if you're not ready for them to stop? Can I artificially forestall this dreaded event by keeping him up later at night or not letting him sleep as late in the morning?

  1. Sorry, Joanna. Can't be of much help here. I haven't tried shortening Adrian's night sleep, but I would think is a good idea if what you are trying to do is stretch nap time for some more months. Also, and a bit harder to do these months, combine it with lots of exercise. When my in-laws take Adrian, he naps for two hours, and goes to sleep at 8pm. The reason it works, I think, is because they take him out for long walks or bike riding. Good luck!
